Nishikant Dubey Movie review - Terminator Genisys

Terminator Genisys

Arnold Schwarzenegger is the man. And he’s most definitely back --a little clunky, getting on in years but still the best ‘Terminator’ this franchise has seen during its chequered history spanning over three decades. He has Game of Thrones’ Khaleesi, Emilia Clarke, with him as one of Hollywood’s most resilient action heroines, Sarah Connor. 

As director Alan Taylor (Thor The Dark World) reboots this classic franchise, there are questions galore over whether he can revive the myth-making and edge-of-the-seat experience of the first two films in the series (Sorry folks, Terminator: Rise of the Machines and Terminator: Salvation just don’t cut it). 

There are two parts to the answer. Terminator Genisys is everything you expect from a summer popcorn cruncher: It is two-hours of sci-fi fun with self referential jokes, a nostalgia trip to the ’80s cult film directed by James Cameron, cool CGI effects which make even the apocalyptic world inhabited by John Connor and his lieutenant look better, and a whole lot of action. We even get to see Arnold’s famous money shot from Terminator 1 as he flashes the city before wreaking havoc on it. And then, it gets better when an older Arnold, with the body still looking like a mini-bus, shows up and an Arnold vs Arnold battle ensues.

PK sticks faithfully to Hirani's well-oiled formula, and yet there is no question that it's a courageous film. Packed with sharp dialogue and genuinely funny moments that offset the lack of subtlety, it is easily one of the year's better films. I'm going with three-and-a-half out of five for PK; the director's best since Lage Raho Munnabhai.

Worldwide Gross- 649 crores.

2. Dhoom 3

Ultimately, the film is let down by a convenient script and its inability to deliver solid entertainment. I'm going with a generous two-and-a-half out of five for writer-director Vijay Krishna Acharya's Dhoom 3. All you expect from the Dhoom movies is a thrill ride, but this one makes you feel like you're stranded in rush hour traffic.

3. Chennai Express

On the whole, CHENNAI EXPRESS has the trademark Rohit Shetty stamp all over. You seek entertainment, entertainment and entertainment in a film like CHENNAI EXPRESS and the movie lives up to the hype and hoopla surrounding it. The tremendous craze surrounding the film, the Rohit Shetty - SRK - Deepika combo, the Eid release, besides the extensive release strategy by UTV, should ensure a record-breaking start for this biggie.

4. 3 Idiots

 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is a film of impeccable pedigree. It's a breezy entertainer and it's got its heart in the right place, but it appears to be lacking in the naiive idealism and old-fashioned sincerity that propelled Hirani's two Munnabhai films to cult status.From the man behind those decade-defining Munnabhai films, however, it is far from his best work. I'm going with three out of five for director Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots, an earnest but calculated effort that runs, but never flies. Watch it anyway, because it's the season to be jolly, and good laughs are guaranteed.

5. Kick 

The first thing you should know about Kick is that it is an outrageously silly film. It lurches from a thwarted love story to infantile comedy to slick action to shamelessly manipulative melodrama without any attempt at coherence or consistency. But even if you’re willing to ignore the logic-free story and buy heavily into the cult of Bhai, Kick is bumpy, and far too convoluted to deliver the joyride of a Dabangg. What does work are the thrilling action sequences; Rajat Aroraa’s crackling dialogue; and, above all, Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the wicked Shiv Gajra.
